L2A Links for March 16th

  • Workplace Learning Professionals Next Job – Management Consultant : eLearning Technology – Tony Karrer pulls together thoughts and responses to the question of what workplace learning will look like in 10 years. I agree that the work will move to "management consultant" (though I would have selected "performance consultant"). But I don't agree there will be continued need for "Enterprise 2.0" and "Knowledge Management". I think those ideas will become as much of an anachronisms as "desktop publishing"or "information technologies" as the tools become as much a part of the way we work as phones, electricity of language. Less and less formalized learning will be needed and the real role of learning professionals will be in process improvement consulting.
  • Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable « Clay Shirky – The always enlightening Clay Shirky chimes in with a meandering piece that finally resolves into the very wise observation that we should not be trying to figure out how to save newspapers, we should be trying to figure out how to save journalism.

  • Time to Reboot America – NYTimes.com – Thomas Friedman hits the nail on the head: “My fellow Americans, we can’t continue in this mode of “Dumb as we wanna be.” We’ve indulged ourselves for too long with tax cuts that we can’t afford, bailouts of auto companies that have become giant wealth-destruction machines, energy prices that do not encourage investment in 21st-century renewable power systems or efficient cars, public schools with no national standards to prevent illiterates from graduating and immigration policies that have our colleges educating the world’s best scientists and engineers and then, when these foreigners graduate, instead of stapling green cards to their diplomas, we order them to go home and start companies to compete against ours.”
  • Google, WalMart, and MyBarackObama.com: The Power of the Real Time Enterprise – O’Reilly Radar – A great post from Tim gets back to what “Web 2.0” is truly about (networked products that explicitly leverage network effects). Lately the “2.0” sticker is getting attached to many things that aren’t really increasing value of the network.
  • Adult Learning Styles – A great summary of the three major theories on different learning styles. Good to keep in mind during learning design. But remember that supporters of the universal design for learning (UDL) believes ideal curriculum design makes learning styles a moot point.
  • Content Sites Bracing For 50% Revenue Slowdown – Ouch. Perhaps it is time to revisit the “freemium” model?
  • When People Don’t Want to Change – Marshall Goldsmith – The great Marshall Goldsmith with a brief post about not wasting time on people who do not want to change. To help those people who do want to change, check out the Progressing Through Change tool at: http://csolved.com/ptc/

Learn to Adapt Links for December 2nd through December 3rd

  • The Partnership for 21st Century Skills – Home – For the K-12 set: A wonderful site advocating the improvement of our education system to include 21st-century skills. From the site: "The Partnership for 21st Century Skills has developed a unified, collective vision for 21st century learning that can be used to strengthen American education." They hit the nail on the head by stressing Creativity and Innovation Skills; Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills, and Communication and Collaboration Skills.
  • Moving towards the 2.0 “movie-going” experience – Ian Da Silva poses a thoughtful question about the future of movie distribution. This parallels many of the "converged" purchase models that I have discussed with my media clients. It will be interesting to see how long it is before you purchase your ticket at a theater and are given the option to pay an extra fee to download the video when it is released online…

  • Dust-up at Training Zone — Internet Time Blog – Jay Cross once again stirs up a great debate with his zealous rhetoric. While I’m not as strident in my views as Jay when it comes to the supposed panacea of informal learning (why can’t we blend social learning in with other modes of learning, Jay?), I do appreciate his stirring up great debates!
  • Measuring Skills for the 21st Century – From the report on building proper measures: “Today, they say, college students, workers, and citizens must be able to solve multifaceted problems by thinking creatively and generating original ideas from multiple sources of information—and tests must measure students’ capacity to do such work.”

  • Get Rid of the Performance Review! – WSJ.com – Samuel Culbert posts an argument against the common practice of performance reviews. This echos a sentiment that I have long held. Reviews really only serve bureaucracy and passive-aggressive accountability. High performers don't need them and low performers should be dealt with immediately through a PIP (instead of passing the confrontational buck to the end of the year). Let's improve performance by managing it instead of reviewing it!
  • The Future of Online Learning: Ten Years On – Stephen Downes provides a vast overview of the state of education (it covers more than just online) by revisiting his essay of ten years ago.

  • A Critical Choice Regarding Innovation – O’Reilly Radar – Good post from Tim O'Reilly regarding innovation and the drivers behind it. It reminds us that collective intelligence is strong in problem solving and knowledge gathering, but there are other drivers at work behind successful innovation
  • Enterprise 2.0: Identify Problem, Find Solution, Then Tools | SocialComputingMagazine.com – Stephen Collins (who I had the great pleasure of teaming with to deliver Web 2.0 learning in Australia) posts an insightful entry on how technology is only the enabler for successful Enterprise 2.0: "Enterprise 2.0 is about the tools least of all – it's principally about people and organisations, the cultures within and among them…"
